Hi, my name is Jemma. I am a mother to one beautiful daughter born in 2009. I live on a farm in the Northamptonshire countryside with my daughter, her Daddy, our 2 English pointers, a few sheep and lots of chickens.
I completed the Birth Bliss course with Kicki Hansard in September 2016 and so known as a mentored birth and postnatal doula. As I work towards being fully recognised by Doula UK I report back and debrief each new experience to my mentor who will advise and guide me.
I trained as a midwife at King's College London where I was priviledged to work in some of the best hopsitals in the UK, including King's, Guy's and St. Thomas'. Working in London has given me a huge amount of experience. I have helped mothers to birth over 100 babies including multiple births and breech babies. I am experienced in home births, hospital births, home from home units and water births. I have worked with people who have additional needs and long term health conditions. I have enjoyed working with people from many different faiths and cultures and am always respectful of women's rights. I have led antenatal classes and postnatal clinics.
Whilst I enjoyed being a midwife I found that it didn't always allow me to give the one-to-one care and support which I believe is so important to women during pregnancy, labour and birth. (Research has consistently shown that one of the most important factors in having a positive labour and birth outcome is one-to -one care). For me, being a doula encapsulates the best parts of midwifery (the part that, unfortunately many midwives do not have time for)...the giving of emotional, practical and physical support and the offering of knowledge which enables women and their partners to become empowered.
I feel very strongly that every woman should be able to give birth in a way that she wants and as a doula I will support that decision. I believe that women should feel supported, cherished and be able to birth with dignity and that the birth partner should be involved and feel part of the process. As a doula I can help you achieve this by giving you the confidence and knowledge to trust your body's instincts and its ability to do what it is designed to do. Whilst things may not always go to plan I can help make sure that your birth experience remains positive.
I will give you the information you need to make an informed decisions. I will be your support and also be there for your partner and family. In short, I will have your back!
